Aunt Mary’s Dispensary Opens 32nd NJ MMJ Dispensary

Aunt Mary’s medical cannabis dispensary opened in Flemington in Hunterdon County. They are New Jersey’s 32nd medical cannabis dispensary.

They are the first medical cannabis dispensary to open in Hunterdon County. Aunt Mary’s dispensary opened last Friday. They were previously known as Altus NJ. The NJ Cannabis Regulatory Commission (NJCRC) approved them in the 2019-2021 New Jersey medical cannabis round last October.

Alexandra Township in Hunterdon County previously defeated Altus/Aunt Mary’s bid to open their cultivation operation within their borders.

They are a vertically-integrated operation. Therefore, Aunt Mary’s dispensary has New Jersey medical cannabis licenses to grow cannabis, manufacture products, and sell them at their dispensary.

The NJCRC has already approved Aunt Mary’s dispensary for adult-use cannabis licenses. They won an adult-use cannabis dispensary license when the NJCRC approved their name change in September.

On Instagram, they proclaim themselves “craft grown.”

Their “About” page does not describe the company’s owners, leaders, or the nature of “Aunt Mary.”

Longtime Cannabis Industry Involvement

Opening in New Jersey has been a long time coming for Altus and the company’s owners.

As Altus, they also sued New Jersey after being denied a license in the 2018 medical cannabis license round. The letter of denial of Altus in their subsequent lawsuit was addressed to Bob Pease of Sleepy Hallow, NY. Pease and Jonathan Goldrath appeared before the Flemington Council in 2019.

According to TAP into Flemington/Raritan, Goldrath explained they are a Multi-State Operator (MSO) with operations in Missouri and Utah.

Pease was the CEO of Agri-Green, which was granted a medical cannabis license in Missouri. He was also the CEO of the MSO Franklin BioScience, which operated in the Pennsylvania medical cannabis market before selling its operations to the larger MSO Jushi. Apparently, he was the head of the Pennsylvania Cannabis Coalition and endorsed adult-use cannabis legalization, which has failed due to Republican opposition in the face of Democratic support.

According to TAPinto, the team also operated Standard Farms medical cannabis cultivator in Pennsylvania. On his personal page, Goldrath describes being a serial entrepreneur and investor in cannabis companies.

A lot of cannabis companies want to be vertically integrated operations with locations throughout the United States. It remains to be seen what the values of many of them are.

Many cannabis consumers and advocates do not like the idea of them dominating New Jersey as they have done for ten years producing mediocre and expensive legal cannabis. Some would like locally owned vertically integrated operations to become Multi-State Operators (MSOs) in their own right.

It remains to be seen how the NJCRC will allow this to play out.

31st NJ Medical Cannabis Dispensary Previously Opened

The MSO Justice Grown renamed itself Bloc and opened the 31st New Jersey medical cannabis dispensary in Somerset in Franklin Twp in Somerset County to little fanfare. It took them four years to open their first location in Ewing.

Their third dispensary is slated to be in Waretown in Ocean County. According to the Justice Grown website, it was supposed to open last year. They would be the first legal dispensary to open in Ocean County.
