New research shows the power of psilocybin/ magic mushrooms to heal Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression, OCD, addiction, and cluster headaches.

Research also suggests long-term boosts to well-being and happiness. It may even have life-extending potential.
Psilocybin Treatment for PTSD
In a 2025 scientific study, 21 participants with PTSD underwent magic mushrooms, shrooms, or psilocybin treatment and were interviewed about their experience.
Participants reported expanded access to self. “Psychedelics seem to work in opening up, almost giving you … a direct door to that really, really deep part of yourself,” one participant said.
Some experienced very challenging somatic symptoms. But many were able to directly engage their trauma. “It was difficult to deal with the emotion … but I relived the experience. So that was difficult, but very important,” another said.
It also helped in more indirect ways. “(psilocybin treatment) allowed me to come to terms with my experience that caused the PTSD … It also allowed me to come to terms with things I didn’t even realize were bothering me… to … think differently about all the positive stuff in my life,” a patient explained.
Shrooms to Treat Depression
Clinical trials have demonstrated psilocybin’s promising antidepressant effects. A 2023 study by Dr. Raison and colleagues found that even a single 25mg dose produced reduced depression in 104 adults over six weeks with no serious adverse effects.
These findings align with a 2020 trial of 24 patients with major depressive disorder, where 71% showed a clinically significant response within the first week and 54% had already reached remission by week four.
Psilocybin to Treat Addiction
Psilocybin can also have very successful therapeutic effects on addiction, especially in combination with psychotherapy.
In a randomized clinical trial with 93 participants in 2022, the percentage of heavy drinking days during 32 weeks of follow-up was significantly lower in the psilocybin group (9.7%) than in the placebo group (23.6%).
Psychedelic Treatment for Cluster Headaches
Cluster Headaches can be extremely painful. In a 2024 study, ten participants suffering from these headaches were administered psilocybin and kept headache diaries throughout the trial.
Three weeks after the start of treatment, the average cluster attacks of the group went from an average of 18.4 to 9.8 a week.
OCD Helped by Shrooms
Research has indicated that it can help with OCD symptoms as well. In a case from 2025, 19 adults were given a 10 mg dose of psilocybin
The study said that “psilocybin produced a rapid-onset, moderate to large effect on compulsive symptoms, which lasted up to one week after dosing.” It suggested future clinical trials examine if multiple weekly doses could be more beneficial in the long run.
Increases in Well-Being
Psilocybin isn’t only useful for those actively suffering severely. In 2023, a scientific review was conducted called “The potential of psilocybin use to enhance well-being in healthy individuals”.
One study from the review showed that it increased participants’ sense of self-love, self-acceptance, self-confidence, and positive emotions. It also helped increase interest in spirituality and improved interpersonal connections. It also caused lifestyle changes in participants, which significantly improved their health and well-being.
According to another study, “79% of the participants attributed a moderately or very high increase in well-being or life satisfaction to the use of psilocybin.”
None of the participants’ life satisfaction was found to have decreased.
Potential Life-Extending Effects
Psilocybin may also extend life itself. Evidence published in 2025 showed psilocin treatment can extend the lifespan of human cells. Separately, mice treated with psilocybin lived significantly longer, suggesting it may be a potent anti-aging agent.
Researchers treated human fetal lung fibroblast cells with 10 micrometer or μM of psilocin which is a compound in a psilocybin mushroom. This caused a 29% extension of cellular lifespan compared to a placebo. When 100 μM was administered, it led to a 57% increase.
The experiment then selected 19-month-old mice. That is about 60–65 human years. Psilocybin treated mice demonstrated “significantly higher survival (80%)” compared to the placebo group (50%).” The mice also exhibited improved fur quality, such as hair growth and fewer white hairs, compared to placebo consuming mice.
Importance of Safety
Psychedelics need to be used cautiously. Psilocybin possession is a misdemeanor in New Jersey.
However, with guidance, many psychedelics show remarkable, safe healing potential that pharmaceuticals at times cannot provide.
More trials and research, along with legalization, will be needed to bring this medicine to those who need it most.
