Activists and NJ cannabis advocates of all ages and colors gathered in Newark yesterday to end the War on Drugs and pass cannabis legalization.
The march was organized by Joshua Alb of Why Not THC. He partnered with the Newark Water Coalition and other groups to put the event together. Veteran Outreach Director for Minorities for Medical Marijuana (M4MM) Leo Bridgewater spoke as did Ken Wolski of the Coalition for Medical Marijuana of New Jersey (CMMNJ), as did Jo Anne Zito, Anthony Diaz of the Newark Water Coalition, and Vladimir Bautista of Happy Munkey, among others.
Protesters first gathered on the steps of Newark City Hall. They marched to Peter Francisco Park by Penn Station with a police escort. As the protesters marched down Broad Street, cars honked. A few people, including a group of young kids, joined the march.
Activists called to end the War on Drugs. NJ cannabis advocates also wanted to end the police brutality it fostered that led to the deaths of George Floyd and Breanna Taylor. In fact, chants of “Say her name! Breanna Taylor!” were exclaimed by the NJ cannabis advocates as they marched.
Alb argued the War on Drugs resulted in more people being imprisoned for petty possession than any good for society. Legalization, on the other hand, would create a new industry that would bring in much-needed tax revenue and good jobs
